Xinhua News Agency: China-U.S. trade talks achieved substantial progress and resulted in important consensus
The Xinhua News Agency Press Release(Chinese Version):
Xinhua News Agency, Geneva, May 11 (Reporters Han Jie, Chen Junxia) — On May 10–11 local time, He Lifeng, Vice Premier of the State Council and China’s lead representative for China-U.S. economic and trade affairs, held high-level economic and trade talks in Geneva, Switzerland with his U.S. counterparts: Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. The two sides engaged in candid, in-depth, and constructive communication on implementing the important consensus reached during the January 17 call between the Chinese and U.S. Presidents, reached a series of important agreements, and made substantial progress in the talks.
He Lifeng stated that China and the United States share broad common interests and have vast potential for cooperation. The nature of China-U.S. economic and trade relations is mutually beneficial and win-win. As two major countries at different stages of development and with different economic systems, it is normal for China and the U.S. to have disagreements and frictions in their economic cooperation. The key, he said, is to follow the guidance of the presidential-level consensus and, in the spirit of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, seek proper solutions through equal-footed dialogue and consultation.
He emphasized that there are no winners in a trade war. China does not want a trade war, but it is not afraid to fight one. If the U.S. insists on harming China’s interests, China will resolutely fight back and accompany the fight to the end. Maintaining healthy, stable, and sustainable development of China-U.S. economic and trade relations serves the fundamental interests of both countries and their peoples and is also conducive to global economic growth. The two sides should tap deeper into cooperation potential, expand areas of collaboration, and grow the “cooperation pie” so as to keep pushing China-U.S. economic relations forward and inject more certainty and stability into the global economy.
The two sides agreed to establish a mechanism for economic and trade consultations, and to maintain communication on their respective concerns in the economic and trade domain.

US White House Press Release:
U.S. Announces China Trade Deal in Geneva
Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent:“I’m happy to report that we made substantial progress between the United States and China in the very important trade talks. First, I want to thank our Swiss host. The Swiss government has been very kind in providing us this wonderful venue, and I think that led to a great deal of productivity we’ve seen. We will be giving details tomorrow, but I can tell you that the talks were productive. We had the vice premier, two vice ministers, who were integrally involved, Ambassador Jamieson, and myself. And I spoke to President Trump, as did Ambassador Jamieson, last night, and he is fully informed of what is going on. So, there will be a complete briefing tomorrow morning.”
U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer:“This was, as the Secretary pointed out, a very constructive two days. It’s important to understand how quickly we were able to come to agreement, which reflects that perhaps the differences were not so large as maybe thought. That being said, there was a lot of groundwork that went into these two days. Just remember why we’re here in the first place — the United States has a massive $1.2 trillion trade deficit, so the President declared a national emergency and imposed tariffs, and we’re confident that the deal we struck with our Chinese partners will help us to work toward resolving that national emergency.”
Trump is a wind vane

Tomorrow from the east
Trump has the integrity of a may fly. Today’s words become tomorrow’s forgotten smoke.
