Xi and Trump discussed Taiwan, ‘fascism and militarism,’ and the Russia–Ukraine conflict during the latest call
Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, November 24 — On the evening of November 24, President Xi Jinping spoke by phone with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Xi Jinping noted that the successful meeting we held last month in Busan, South Korea, produced many important consensuses, helping set the course and inject momentum into the steady advancement of the giant ship of China–U.S. relations, while also sending a positive signal to the world. Since the Busan meeting, China–U.S. relations have remained generally stable and improving, which has been widely welcomed by both countries and by the international community. Facts once again show that “cooperation benefits both sides, confrontation hurts both” — a conclusion repeatedly proven by practice — and that “achieving each other’s success and prospering together” is an objective reality that can be clearly seen and felt. Both sides should maintain this momentum, stay on the right course, and uphold the principles of equality, mutual respect, and mutual benefit. We should expand the list of cooperation, narrow the list of problems, strive for more positive progress, open up new space for cooperation in China–U.S. relations, and better deliver benefits to the people of both countries and the world.
Xi expounded China’s principled position on the Taiwan question, stressing that Taiwan’s return to China is an important component of the post–World War II international order. China and the United States once fought side by side against fascism and militarism, and today we should work together to safeguard the hard-won outcomes of World War II.
Trump stated that President Xi is a great leader. He said he very much enjoyed the meeting with President Xi in Busan and fully agrees with Xi’s views on bilateral relations. Both sides are comprehensively implementing the important consensuses reached in Busan. China made significant contributions to the victory in World War II, and the U.S. side understands the importance of the Taiwan question to China.
The two heads of state also discussed the Ukraine crisis. Xi emphasized that China supports all efforts conducive to peace and hopes all parties will continue narrowing differences and reach, as soon as possible, a fair, enduring, and binding peace agreement to resolve the crisis at its roots.

I just had a very good telephone call with President Xi, of China. We discussed many topics including Ukraine/Russia, Fentanyl, Soybeans and other Farm Products, etc. We have done a good, and very important, deal for our Great Farmers — and it will only get better. Our relationship with China is extremely strong! This call was a follow up to our highly successful meeting in South Korea, three weeks ago. Since then, there has been significant progress on both sides in keeping our agreements current and accurate. Now we can set our sights on the big picture. To that end, President Xi invited me to visit Beijing in April, which I accepted, and I reciprocated where he will be my guest for a State Visit in the U.S. later in the year. CNBC: What we’ve heard from this conversation with President Trump and President Xi, the readouts from the two countries were a little different. Obviously, the United States has a very important push on making sure that China does step up its purchases of soybeans. How is that going?
Bessent: Well, first of all, Becky, to set the record straight, President Trump initiated the call 30 days the after the historic meeting in Busan, South Korea between the two leaders. They have a great relationship. And as far as the soybeans, the Chinese are right on schedule in terms of the cadence of their purchases. So over the next three and a half years, we’re gonna see the eight, 80, seven and a half million metric tons purchased by the Chinese minimum, and they’re right on schedule.
CNBC: There have been some reports coming from China where their take on this talk is a little different, at least what they emphasized and the talks was a little different. They bring up both Ukraine and the US position and the China, the Chinese position on Taiwan, what is the US position on Taiwan at this point?
Bessent: US position on Taiwan is unchanged. And on Ukraine, president and party chair Xi agreed that area peace in this Ukraine conflict, they must move forward and they agreed to work together on it.
