China's readout of Vice President Han Zheng's attendance to President Trump’s inauguration ceremony
On January 20 (local time), at the invitation of the U.S. side, Han Zheng—China’s Vice President and Special Representative of President Xi Jinping—attended President Donald Trump’s inauguration ceremony in Washington.
During his visit, Han Zheng met with Vice President-elect Vance, and separately held meetings with representatives of the U.S. business community, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, and Brookings Institution Honorary Chairman Thornton, among others.
While meeting with Vice President-elect Vance, Han Zheng first conveyed President Xi Jinping’s greetings to President Trump and offered congratulations on Vance’s election. Han Zheng noted that President Xi and President Trump had an important phone conversation recently, reaching significant consensus on the next stage of China-U.S. relations. China is willing to work with the U.S., upholding the strategic guidance of top-level diplomacy, to implement the important understandings reached between President Xi and President Trump, and to advance stable, healthy, and sustainable development of China-U.S. ties.
Han Zheng pointed out that both China and the United States are currently striving to achieve their own development goals and dreams. As long as the two countries adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and win-win cooperation, they can certainly support each other’s success, benefit both nations, and make important contributions to global peace and development. While economic and trade relations remain a major concern for both sides and there are indeed differences and frictions between China and the U.S., the two countries share extensive common interests and have significant room for cooperation. Both sides should strengthen dialogue and consultations to address these issues.
Vance asked Han Zheng to convey President Trump’s sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping, adding that the recent telephone call between President Trump and President Xi provided a good channel of communication on key issues in bilateral relations. According to Vance, economic and trade relations are very important to both the U.S. and China. Given China’s growing influence in international affairs, the U.S. side looks forward to a long-term, productive relationship with China, and seeks to enhance dialogue and cooperation on international and regional issues, working together to promote world peace and stability.
In his meeting with representatives of the U.S. business community, Han Zheng stated that ensuring a good start and stable development of China-U.S. relations aligns with the shared welfare of the two peoples and meets the broad expectations of the international community. He stressed that the U.S. business community has long been a pillar in supporting China-U.S. relations and has been a key participant, witness, contributor, and beneficiary in China-U.S. economic and trade cooperation as well as in China’s reform and opening up. Han Zheng affirmed China’s commitment to reform and opening up and to continuously improving its business environment. He expressed hope that American companies would continue to invest in and remain rooted in China, acting as bridges to further the development of China-U.S. relations.
U.S. business representatives noted that as the world’s two most dynamic and technologically advanced major economies, the U.S. and China should pursue mutually beneficial cooperation and work toward a constructive and stable mode of engagement. They see strong prospects for the Chinese economy and further opportunities in the Chinese market, and they support enhanced dialogue and communication between the two countries to continue moving forward in bilateral relations and economic cooperation.
When meeting with Elon Musk and Thornton, Han Zheng emphasized that the Chinese side welcomes American businesses and all sectors to seize opportunities, take active steps, and share in the benefits of China’s development. He encouraged broader exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States in economics, trade, culture, and other fields, so as to deepen mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples and continually improve and strengthen the public support for China-U.S. relations.
Musk and Thornton both stated that economic and cultural exchanges between the U.S. and China are of great importance. They expressed willingness to continue playing a positive role in advancing these exchanges.
